UN suspends Russia from human rights council, motivated move, Moscow

The United Nations General Assembly has suspended Russia from Human Rights Council after killings in Ukraine's Bucha, reports news agency AFP. Evidence of civilian killings in Bucha and other towns around Kyiv -- which Ukraine has blamed on Russian troops, allegations denied by Moscow -- have shocked the world and triggered calls for new sanctions on Moscow.  Of the 193 members of the assembly, 93 voted in favor of suspension as proposed by the United States while 24 voted against and 58 abstained, suggesting weakening international unity against Russia at the United Nations. It was the second ever suspension of a country from the council. Libya was the first, in 2011. Ukraine said it was "grateful" for the decision to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, saying "war criminals" should not be represented in the body. Speaking after the vote, Russia's deputy U.N. Ambassador Gennady Kuzmin described the move as an "illegitimate and politically motivated step" and then announced that Russia had decided to quit the Human Rights Council altogether.

European Parliament calls for immediate embargo on Russian oil, gas, coal, nuclear fuel. The resolution also calls for a special U.N. tribunal for Russia's war crimes, excluding Russia from the G20 and other organizations, and stepping up the delivery of weapons to Ukraine.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has given up on conquering Kyiv after his forces were soundly beaten back by the Ukrainian military. Austin told the panel of lawmakers that the United States is providing intelligence to Ukraine's military to support its fight in the Donbas, where Moscow-backed secessionists have been fighting government forces since 2014 and now have the direct support of Russian troops.
