Trump pauses tariffs on Canada, Mexico for 30 days

US President Donald Trump held off on his tariff threats against Mexico and Canada for 30 days after the two US neighbours agreed to boost border security efforts. In a statement on 'X', Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that on a call with Donald Trump, he pledged additional cooperation on border security. It follows similar moves by Mexico.Trudeau said Canada will implement a $1.3 billion plan to reinforce the border with new choppers, technology and personnel to enhance coordination with “American partners” and increase resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. “Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border,” Trudeau said on X.

Trump said his telephone call with Trudeau went “very well”. “As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured. FAIRNESS FOR ALL!,” he said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Trump and his Mexican counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum both announced the halt in the levies after she agreed to send 10,000 troops to the US-Mexico border following talks on Monday.Trump said on his Truth Social network that after the "very friendly conversation" he had "agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period."
