The US president waded into the debate on his Truth Social account on Tuesday evening, claiming the situation in France has become 'out of control'. It follows days of protests in the country's major cities as hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to protest failing school conditions. 'This isn't about schools, this is about Islam wanting to take over a once great Country! President DJT.' Trump, however, rejected the idea that the unrest was primarily about education.
France witnessed its biggest day of school protests since the movement began in September, with students, teachers and parents taking to the streets over deteriorating school conditions, staff shortages and inadequate funding. Hundreds of thousands of students and their supporters took part in nationwide demonstrations, barricading school entrances and marching through France's major cities. The interior ministry estimated that a quarter of a million people took part on Tuesday; organisers maintain it was almost twice that. A number of France's trade unions have called for members to throw their support behind the protesting students Tuesday to shield them from possible police violence.
France's Interior Ministry this evening revealed that more than 6,100 demonstrators have been arrested since protests began last month.1483 of them minors, since the protests began three weeks ago.' All were taken into custody for a variety of public order offences, from violence against public officials to vandalism. At least 715 officers and 215 teenagers have been badly injured in clashes, it added.
The French government has deployed riot police as the demonstrations have spread. Rights groups, student organisations and parents have criticised the police response, accusing authorities of using disproportionate force, particularly against minors. The government, meanwhile, has argued that outside groups and violent elements have increasingly taken over parts of the movement, shifting the focus away from education.
