SriLanka: Basil’s exit from country foiled after protests by passengers

In Sri Lanka,  former finance minister Basil Rajapaksa, the youngest brother of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, blocked from boarding an Emirates flight to Dubai on Monday. According to Sri Lanka-based Daily Mirror, an attempt by former Minister Basil Rajapaksa to leave the country through the Silk Route Passenger Clearance Terminal was foiled due to airport immigration officials refusing to let him leave the country following the protests by passengers.

The former Minister arrived at the Bandar Naike International Airport Basil Rajapksa was to fly to Washington via Dubai,daranaike International Airport (BIA) at 12.00 midnight to leave for Dubai. The reserved flight for Basil Rajapaksa was scheduled to leave for Dubai at 3.15 am.

However, the immigration officers refused to approve Basil Rajapaksa's departure. Later, the Sri Lanka Immigration and Emigration Officers' Association (SLIEOA) decided to withdraw from functioning at the Silk Route Passenger Clearance Terminal in the night. People at the main international airport serving Colombo began protesting when they saw Basil Rajapaksa trying to depart, the person said, asking not to be identified given the sensitivity of the situation.  However, it was reported that Basil Rajapaksa had to return without being able to proceed.
