India continues to be the fastest-growing major economy in the world, despite global disruptions, with the economy recording a robust 7.8 per cent growth in the first quarter of FY 2026-27, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Wednesday.
According to agency reports,Sitharaman made the remarks while addressing a high-level business roundtable with investors in New York, organised by the Consulate General of India in association with Bank of America.Highlighting India’s reform-oriented approach, Sitharaman said measures such as the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code have strengthened regulatory certainty, eased compliance and reduced paperwork.

She also outlined the government’s focus on infrastructure development, including aviation, improving the investment climate, promoting AI and data centres, supporting global capability centres, ensuring credit availability to MSMEs and reducing banks’ non-performing assets.
Sitharaman said India has remained committed to fiscal prudence and discipline despite global economic challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic. She added that both central and state governments are increasingly focused on attracting and facilitating investments.These efforts, she said, are aligned with the broader vision of building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.Meanwhile, India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, said the latest GDP figures demonstrate the resilience of the Indian economy. He noted that stronger trade and investment linkages could enable both India and the US to benefit from India’s fast-growing economic trajectory.
