Seychelles backs India’s permanent UNSC bid ahead of PM Modi’s visit

Seychelles has reiterated its support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), with Foreign Minister Barry Faure saying New Delhi’s global role, population strength and contributions to international peace and security make it deserving of a place at the world body’s highest decision-making forum.
Speaking ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Seychelles, Faure said the global order established after 1945 and existing international institutions need reforms to reflect current geopolitical realities.“The global order established in 1945 needs reform. International institutions must better reflect today’s realities. There is a strong need for more balanced representation, particularly for countries like India and regions like Africa, which currently lack permanent representation in key global institutions,” Faure said.He said India’s contributions to peacekeeping, maritime security and multilateral diplomacy strengthen its case for permanent membership of the UNSC.

“Seychelles supports this position. India has also played a strong role in the Non-Aligned Movement, and its inclusion would strengthen global balance and peace,” the Foreign Minister said.Faure described India-Seychelles relations as an “excellent” partnership that has evolved over decades since Seychelles gained independence in 1976. He said the relationship has grown into a strategic partnership based on mutual trust and cooperation.
Welcoming Prime Minister Modi’s visit, Faure said Seychelles was honoured that the Indian leader would attend the country’s Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour, noting that the visit reflects the importance of bilateral ties.“India is one of our closest partners, but we continue to maintain relations with all countries that respect our sovereignty and independence,” he said, highlighting Seychelles’ independent foreign policy approach.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday departed for a two-day state visit to Seychelles, where he will participate in the country’s Golden Jubilee celebrations and hold discussions aimed at further strengthening cooperation between the two nations.The visit is expected to focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas including maritime security, development partnership, trade, connectivity and regional stability in the Indian Ocean region.
