Protests erupt across Bangladesh after student leader's death

Unrest has taken over Bangladesh following the ourage caused by the death of Sharif Osman Hadi. He died on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at a Singapore hospital after fighting for his life for six days. Hadi, who was a prominent leader from the 2024 student uprising, was shot at during his campaign for the upcoming national elections in Dhaka. Protesters accused authorities of failing to protect Hadi, the convener of the political platform Inquilab Mancha. Jatiya Chhatra Shakti on Thursday staged a protest demanding the resignation of Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, citing the failure to arrest those involved in the attack on Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.The demonstrations soon escalated, with a group vandalising the office of Daily Prothom Alo, the country’s largest newspaper, amid heightened outrage.Local media reports that several people are stranded inside the building that houses the offices of Prothom Alo & Daily Star. Protesters first vandalised these offices and then set them ablaze.

In Rajshahi, protesters set fire to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence and an Awami League office, causing extensive damage. A group of protesters staged a sit-in outside the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chattogram after news of the death of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, the convenor of Inqilab Moncho, BD News reported. Interim government chief Muhammad Yunus appeals for peace as Sharif Osman Hadi, died on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at a Singapore hospital.
