Prez Murmu meets Iranian Prez Pezeshkian on BRICS sidelines

President Droupadi Murmu held a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.The meeting comes during Pezeshkian’s first visit to India, as Iran participates in the BRICS Summit following its entry as a full member of the grouping in January 2024.
President Murmu and Pezeshkian discussed the longstanding India-Iran relationship and ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. Their talks also come amid continued developments in West Asia and growing international focus on regional peace and stability.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also met Pezeshkian in New Delhi, continuing discussions from their previous interaction on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi appreciated Iran’s continued high-level participation in BRICS-related meetings despite challenging circumstances and thanked Pezeshkian for taking part in the Leaders’ Session of the BRICS Business Forum.The two leaders also exchanged views on the situation in West Asia. Modi reiterated India’s position that outstanding issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, while stressing the need for sustained efforts towards lasting peace and stability in the region.He also underscored the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce, as well as the safety and well-being of seafarers.
India and Iran have also continued to cooperate on issues of mutual interest in multilateral forums, including BRICS. Iran, along with Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, became a full member of BRICS in January 2024.The meetings highlight India’s efforts to deepen engagement with key BRICS partners while strengthening its longstanding bilateral ties with Iran.
