PM Modi holds bilateral talks at BRICS backs Global South

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attending the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil, held a series of bilateral meetings on Monday with the Presidents of Bolivia and Uruguay, aiming to deepen ties and expand cooperation across various sectors. The meetings focused on strengthening diplomatic and economic engagement between India and the Latin American nations, as part of India’s broader outreach to the Global South.
At the BRICS session on “Environment, COP30, and Global Health,” PM Modi highlighted India’s climate leadership, stating, “India was the first country to achieve its Paris commitments ahead of schedule.” His remarks reinforced India’s global image as a responsible climate actor and set the tone for enhanced collaboration on sustainable development.
The BRICS Leaders’ Declaration adopted on Sunday reflected India’s key priorities, particularly its long-standing concerns over cross-border terrorism and the urgent need for reform in global governance institutions. Speaking at the session on “Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance,” Modi called out the “double standards” often faced by developing nations and underscored the need for a stronger voice for the Global South in international decision-making forums.

In another significant engagement on the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi met with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez. The two leaders explored avenues to strengthen cooperation in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, traditional medicine, and digital public infrastructure. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions also covered expanding collaboration in Ayurveda, Unified Payment Interface (UPI), disaster management, and capacity building — areas where India has offered its technological and institutional expertise to partner nations.
