An earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck Mindanao in the Philippines on Monday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said. The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), GFZ said. GFZ earlier pegged the earthquake at 7.3. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat to the earthquake.

The Philippines Seismology Agency warned of waves exceeding 1m above normal tide levels. It urged residents in coastal areas of some southern Philippine provinces to evacuate immediately to higher grounds or move further inland. Indonesia's geophysics agency also issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas in the country's northeast.
Japan likewise issued a tsunami advisory along swathes of its Pacific coast.
