Namibia a valued and trusted partner in Africa: PM Modi

India seeks to boost bilateral cooperation with Namibia, which is a "valued and trusted partner" in Africa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday as he arrived Windhoek on the final leg of his five-nation visit. This is the first visit of Prime Minister Modi to Namibia and the third-ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to the country.The Prime Minister was received by Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, Minister of International Relations and Trade of Namibia, at the airport. He was accorded a traditional welcome.

Later, PM Modi held delegation-level talks with the Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the State House in capital city of Windhoek. The deliberations were aimed at deepening the economic partnership between the two countries by exploring new areas of cooperation in critical sectors. Several MoUs are expected to be signed, focusing on expanding cooperation in key areas such as energy security, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals between the two countries.

Earlier, PM Modi expressed deep pride in the Indian diaspora in Namibia, commending their role in preserving Indian culture and fostering stronger ties between India and the southern African nation. Local musicians and dancers performed at the airport to mark the occasion. In a gesture that drew warm applause, Prime Minister Modi joined the performers and played the Namibian drums, highlighting his appreciation for local customs and traditions.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and Namibia share historic ties dating back to India’s early support for Namibia’s independence movement. In 1946, India raised the issue of Namibian independence at the United Nations.
