Mudslide kills 1, leaves 11 missing in China after heavy rain

A mudslide triggered by days of torrential rain killed one person and left 11 others missing in eastern China on Saturday, damaging around a dozen houses, according to media reports.The mudslide struck part of a village in Suichuan County in Jiangxi province in the early hours of Saturday. Rescue teams were dispatched to the area, while residents were moved to safer locations to prevent further casualties.
According to sources, rescuers pulled three people from the debris. One person was found dead, while two others were rescued alive and were reported to be in stable condition.The heavy rainfall was linked to tropical cyclone Saudel, which has affected parts of southeastern China in recent days.
Saudel made two landfalls in Zhejiang province on August 28 before making a third landfall as a tropical storm in Fujian province on Thursday, according to media reports. Zhejiang and Fujian both border Jiangxi.Heavy rain has also caused widespread damage in Fujian, with several residents reported missing following days of intense rainfall. More than 100 houses collapsed in Huating Town in Putian city, according to media reports.
A dike also reportedly overtopped and breached on Thursday afternoon, causing flooding in nearby villages and leaving some residents trapped.Around 600,000 people had been evacuated from high-risk offshore and coastal areas in Fujian by Friday night as authorities stepped up precautionary measures amid the continuing threat of heavy rain and flooding.Rescue and relief operations remain underway in the affected areas, with authorities continuing to search for those reported missing and assessing the extent of damage caused by the mudslide and flooding.
