JD Vance leaves Islamabad after Iran talks end without deal

U.S. Vice President JD Vance left Islamabad on Sunday after negotiations with Iran concluded without an agreement, signaling continued uncertainty in the ongoing diplomatic efforts. In a statement before leaving, Vance said the American delegation was returning to Washington, D.C. after nearly 21 hours of talks, during which it presented its “final and best offer” to Tehran. He noted that while discussions were substantive and conducted in good faith, the proposal has yet to be accepted. “We will see if the Iranians accept it,” he said, adding that Washington is still allowing time for Iran to consider the offer. He indicated that the core issue remains Iran’s nuclear programme, stressing the need for a firm and long-term commitment from Tehran not to pursue nuclear weapons. “The simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” Vance said, adding that such assurances have not yet been received.

According to media reports the talks concluded without a breakthrough, citing what it described as “excessive demands” from the U.S. side as a key hurdle. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said discussions covered multiple issues, including the Strait of Hormuz, nuclear matters, sanctions relief, and broader regional tensions, adding that progress depends on seriousness and mutual respect for each side’s interests.

U.S. President Donald Trump described the talks as “very deep” and maintained that the United States had approached negotiations with flexibility. He also said U.S. forces had significantly weakened Iran’s naval capabilities and confirmed that American warships had transited the Strait of Hormuz to ensure secure maritime movement. The inconclusive outcome highlights the fragile state of U.S.-Iran relations, with both sides maitaining  firm positions even as diplomatic engagement continues.
