Jaishankar says BRICS unity key to Bloc’s future cooperation

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Thursday said BRICS must play a “constructive and stabilising role” at a time of growing global uncertainty, stressing the need for stronger cooperation among emerging economies amid ongoing geopolitical and economic challenges.
Addressing the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaishankar said the world was witnessing a period of considerable flux marked by conflicts, economic uncertainties, and challenges related to trade, technology and climate change.“There is a growing expectation, particularly from emerging markets and developing countries, that BRICS will play a constructive and stabilising role,” he said.The minister said development issues continue to remain central for many nations grappling with energy, food, fertiliser and health security concerns, along with limited access to finance.“BRICS can help them respond more effectively,” he noted, adding that economic resilience through reliable supply chains and diversified markets was equally important.

Jaishankar also underscored the importance of uninterrupted maritime connectivity for global economic stability.“Safe, unimpeded maritime flows through international waters, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, are vital for global economic well-being,” he said.He further called for addressing the increasing use of unilateral coercive measures and sanctions that are inconsistent with international law and the United Nations Charter.
Highlighting India’s role as Chair, Jaishankar said more than 80 BRICS meetings had been organised with active participation from all member nations, helping deepen cooperation and dialogue across sectors.“These engagements have strengthened cooperation and advanced dialogue across sectors. We look forward to building on this momentum,” he said.
Stressing the need for a more inclusive and collaborative BRICS framework, the External Affairs Minister said India has also been engaging partner countries during its chairmanship.He, however, underlined that the smooth advancement of BRICS depended on newer members aligning with the bloc’s core principles and consensus on key issues.“It is essential for the smooth advancement of BRICS that later members fully appreciate and subscribe to the BRICS consensus on various important issues,” Jaishankar said.
BRICS currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
