Jaishankar calls for stronger Global South solidarity, seeks UN reforms

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has urged Global South nations to forge greater solidarity, deepen cooperation, and collectively press for comprehensive reform of the United Nations and other multilateral institutions to better reflect the realities of today’s world.Speaking at a High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South countries on Tuesday, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Jaishankar underscored the growing urgency for developing nations to work together in shaping the global agenda.“In the face of a proliferation of global concerns and multiplicity of risks, it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions,” the minister said in a post on X, sharing details of the meeting.

Outlining a structured approach, Jaishankar presented five key proposals to strengthen the collective voice and influence of the Global South. He stressed the need to fully utilise existing forums to enhance consultations, deepen solidarity, and encourage collaboration among developing countries.Calling for a comprehensive overhaul of the UN and “multilateralism as a whole,” the minister urged the Global South to showcase its strengths and achievements on the international stage. He cited India’s experience with vaccines, digital capabilities, education capacities, agricultural practices, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as areas where developing nations could lead by example.
Highlighting the need for equity in addressing global challenges, Jaishankar said the Global South must devise initiatives in areas such as climate action and climate justice that serve its own interests, rather than aligning solely with perspectives of the Global North. He also underlined the importance of engaging in discussions on emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to ensure developing countries are not left behind in the evolving global order.India has consistently championed the voice of the Global South in international forums, reiterating its commitment to ensuring that developing nations play a meaningful role in shaping multilateral frameworks and advancing a fairer world order.
