Iran ties Strait of Hormuz reopening to US concessions on key demands

Iran has said the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will depend on the United States meeting several demands, even as Tehran and Oman near an agreement on new shipping lanes through the strategic waterway.
According to agency reports,Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Sunday that a deal with Oman was in its “final stages”, but stressed that commercial shipping would resume only after Washington meets conditions set by Tehran. The proposed agreement would establish new routes between Iran and Oman for vessels using the strait, a key global energy corridor.Tehran wants Washington to provide compensation for damage caused by US strikes, end sanctions and military threats, lift a naval blockade in the Gulf and release frozen Iranian assets.“Once the deal is announced to restore commercial shipping without impediments, the United States will lift the blockade of Iranian ports,” a US official told Reuters.

The official said Washington’s steps would depend on Iran fulfilling its commitments under the proposed arrangement. Iran and the US are not holding direct negotiations, with messages being exchanged through intermediaries, according to media rpeorts. Araqchi said Tehran would not begin direct talks while Washington continues to violate an interim agreement reached in June.
US President Donald Trump said Washington was “semi-negotiating” with Iran while monitoring its economic situation. The possible deal comes amid continued regional tensions. The UAE has accused Iran of attacking a vessel linked to its state oil company, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has previously targeted ships attempting to cross the strait without permission.Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed an attack on Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery on Sunday. Saudi authorities confirmed a fire at the facility but said it was extinguished without injuries.
