Indians in Sudan urged to stay indoors amid army-paramilitary clash

Indians in Sudan have been asked to take shelter by the country's mission in the African nation following explosions and gunfire in the capital city as paramilitaries and the regular army traded attacks on each other's bases. Several rounds of firing were heard in Sudan's capital Khartoum amid the simmering tensions between the military and the country's paramilitary forces. "In view of reported firings and clashes, all Indians are advised to take utmost precautions, stay indoors and stop venturing outside with immediate effect. Please also stay calm and wait for updates," a tweet from the Indian Embassy in Khartoum read.

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces claimed to have taken control of the presidential palace, the residence of Sudan's Army Chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Khartoum's international airport.All flights from Khartoum airport have been suspended. The paramilitary also said it took over the Merowe airport and base north of the capital. "Clashes are ongoing and the army is carrying out its duty to safeguard the country," army spokesperson, Brigadier General Nabil Abdallah said.
