India, Uganda reaffirm mutual appreciation for bilateral partnership

India-Uganda ties were reaffirmed during a meeting between India’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Upendra Singh Rawat, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala on Monday.
According to agency reports, Rawat met Museveni as part of a farewell courtesy call, with both sides expressing appreciation for the longstanding partnership between India and Uganda.The High Commission of India in Uganda said the meeting also highlighted recent milestones in bilateral relations, including Ugandan Vice President Jessica Rose Epel Alupo’s participation in the BRICS Summit in New Delhi and the convocation at the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) campus in Jinja.
The meeting followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction with Vice President Alupo on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 13.During their meeting, Modi and Alupo discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation in technology partnerships, capacity building, knowledge sharing, investment facilitation and private-sector collaboration.They also discussed cooperation in healthcare, agriculture and digital technologies, while stressing the importance of people-to-people ties and India’s development partnership with Uganda.
Modi reaffirmed India’s support for Uganda’s Vision 2040, which aims to transform the country into a modern and prosperous economy. The two sides also called for closer engagement to strengthen the voice of the Global South in multilateral forums.India and Uganda share longstanding ties across political, economic, defence, education and healthcare sectors. Prime Minister Modi visited Uganda in July 2018, while External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited the country in April 2023.During Jaishankar’s 2023 visit, India and Uganda signed an agreement to establish the first overseas campus of the National Forensic Sciences University in Jinja.Modi has also previously referred to his 2018 Uganda visit and the Kampala Principles, which he said continue to guide India’s engagement with Africa.
