India, Sri Lanka leaders assess energy security, sea route stability

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a telephonic conversation with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, during which the two leaders exchanged views on the evolving situation in West Asia and its implications for global energy security.The discussion comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region, which have raised concerns over potential disruptions to critical energy supply chains. Both leaders underscored the importance of ensuring uninterrupted energy flows and maintaining stability in global markets.

A key focus of the dialogue was maritime security, with the two sides emphasising the need to keep vital shipping routes open and secure. Given the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean region for global trade, the leaders highlighted the role of regional cooperation in safeguarding sea lanes and preventing supply bottlenecks.The conversation also included a review of ongoing bilateral initiatives aimed at deepening India–Sri Lanka cooperation in the energy sector. Efforts to enhance connectivity, promote sustainable energy solutions, and strengthen infrastructure collaboration were discussed as part of broader economic engagement between the two neighbours.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision, Modi stressed the importance of close coordination between New Delhi and Colombo in addressing shared regional challenges.
