India condemns massacre in POJK, UK MPs also raise concerns

India on Tuesday strongly criticised Pakistan over reports of deadly violence in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), accusing Islamabad of attempting to conceal its failures through a campaign of misinformation and calling on the international community to hold it accountable for alleged human rights abuses. Addressing a media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Pakistan was resorting to "fake news and videos" to divert attention from the situation in the region. "We continue to see in this context a pattern of fake news and videos emanating from Pakistan. It is a desperate attempt by Pakistan to cover up its own failings and deflect attention away from its human rights abuses," Jaiswal said.

The crackdown by Pakistani authorities on civilians has also drawn in global condemnation. More than 50 members of the British Parliament have written to UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressing concern over reports of a communications blackout, arrests, and escalating tensions in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. In the letter, the parliamentarians highlighted reports from the region of internet and mobile service disruptions, restrictions on communications, and growing unrest. They said, they had been contacted by numerous British Kashmiris who were unable to establish contact with relatives in the region. They noted that restrictions on communications in an already sensitive political environment risk increasing uncertainty and further escalating tensions.

The latest confrontations in PoK are a part of a protracted, multi-year mass struggle spearheaded by the Awami Action Committee. The local populace has been demonstrating against high electricity costs, severe inflation and an abject absence of political autonomy under Pakistani rule. A shutdown on communications in the area, border blocks and public outrage over the arrest of multiple JAAC leaders, escalated the tensions.
