Huge wildfires rip through Turkey as parts of city evacuated

In Turkey, a wildfire has spread towards residential areas in Antalya, forcing residents to flee as powerful winds pushed the flames through the Aksu district. The blaze broke out at around 6pm local time on Monday and quickly moved towards built-up areas. Smoke was seen billowing over the Karaöz neighbourhood, while at least one property was completely gutted by the flames. As the fire continued to spread, authorities evacuated residents from several areas. The flames also moved towards the boundaries of Döşemealtı, Kızıllı and Ilıca, with an animal shelter among the locations evacuated.

The strong winds have made it harder for crews to contain the blaze, pushing flames and burning material towards populated areas. Around 45 fire engines and 275 firefighters have been deployed to fight the fire. Nine helicopters and three aircraft are also supporting the operation as crews attempt to contain the flames from both the ground and the air. The cause of the Turkey fire remains unclear. Fire crews, helicopters and aircraft continue to work at the scene as strong winds threaten to drive the flames further into surrounding areas. There have been no reported casualties so far.
