A senior Iranian military official warned that renewed fighting with the US was “likely” after President Donald Trump rejected Tehran's proposal. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Saturday the US president’s remarks describing naval seizures as “piracy” amounted to a “direct and damning admission” of unlawful conduct, urging the international community to reject violations of maritime law. "The President of the United States has openly described the unlawful seizure of Iranian vessels as “piracy,” brazenly boasting that “we act like pirates.” This was no verbal slip," he posted on X.
Iran’s Tasnim News Agency has reported that Tehran, in response to Washington’s 9-point proposal, has sent its own 14-point plan for negotiations, emphasizing an end to the war instead of a temporary ceasefire. According to the report, Iran’s plan includes demands for guarantees against renewed attacks, the withdrawal of US forces from areas surrounding Iran, an end to the naval blockade, the unfreezing of Iranian assets, the lifting of sanctions, and an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Iranian lawmakers say Israeli vessels will be permanently barred from the Strait of Hormuz and ships from the United States and its allies would be allowed through only if they pay war reparations, under a proposed plan to place the waterway under Iranian “management.” Ali Nikzad, the first deputy speaker of Iran’s parliament, said vessels belonging to “hostile countries” would also be barred from crossing the strait unless they first paid compensation for damage caused during the war. “Managing the Strait of Hormuz is more important than acquiring nuclear weapons, ”Iran said.
The US Treasury has warned that any shipper paying tolls to Iran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, including charitable donations to organisations such as the Iranian Red Crescent Society, is at risk of punitive sanctions. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically vital maritime routes, with about 20% of the world's seaborne crude oil and liquefied natural gas flows passing through it.
