In the USA, a powerful winter storm swept across California on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds that triggered mudslides, debris flows, water rescues and evacuation orders, as forecasters warned Southern California could see its wettest Christmas in years.Authorities warned of flash flooding and mudslides, particularly in areas scarred by wildfires earlier this year. Los Angeles County officials said about 380 evacuation orders were delivered. California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Shasta counties.

The emergency proclamation allows for the rapid mobilization of state resources and support for local governments under the California Disaster Assistance Act and the deployment of the California National Guard, if needed. It also authorizes Caltrans to seek federal assistance for repairs to damaged roads and highways.
An alert for falling trees and power outrage has also been issued across Northwest California. The administration has pre-deployed over 250 personnel and equipment across 14 counties to aid in storm response. Swift water teams, urban search and rescue teams, engines and helicopters are also pre-positioned.
