Taipei has said that 21 Chinese military planes flew into Taiwan's air defence zone on Tuesday after the arrival of US House speaker Pelosi's arrival in Taiwan on Tuesday evening. "Our delegation's visit to Taiwan honors America's unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan's vibrant democracy," she said in a statement upon her arrival, adding that her visit "in no way contradicts" US policy towards Taiwan and Beijing. Taiwanese Foreign Ministry welcomes US Senator Nancy Pelosi. As per media report,Pelosi will meet the president of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday after which she will leave the island in the afternoon local time.

John Kirby, the White House’s National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications has said that US president Biden ‘respects’ Pelosi’s decision to visit Taiwan.
On whether Biden supports Pelosi's trip to Taipei, John Kirby tells reporters: "He respects the speaker’s decision to travel to Taiwan."

China's military said it was on "high alert" and would "launch a series of targeted military actions in response" to the visit. It promptly announced plans for a series of military exercises in waters around the island to begin on Wednesday, including "long-range live ammunition shooting" in the Taiwan Strait. China summoned the US ambassador in Beijing Tuesday to rebuke him over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's "egregious" trip to Taiwan, state media reported.
