Cargo aircraft skids off Hong Kong airport runway into sea, 2 killed

Two people were killed after a cargo plane flying from Dubai skidded off the runway and plunged into the sea while landing at Hong Kong International Airport early Monday, airport authorities said. The accident happened at around 3:50 am local time (1950 GMT Sunday) and involved a Boeing 747 freighter operated by Turkish cargo carrier AirACT, flying under an Emirates flight number.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) confirmed that the aircraft overshot the northern runway during landing and ended up partially submerged in the waters near the airport perimeter. As per reports, Two men aboard the ground vehicle were initially reported missing. One, aged 30, was pulled from the sea and confirmed dead at the scene at 5.55am. The other, aged 41, was sent to North Lantau Hospital and was confirmed dead at 6.26am.According to the Airport Authority’s website, 12 cargo flights have been cancelled throughout Monday so far.
