14 dead in explosion during rally in NW Pakistan

In Pakistan, at least 14 people, including five security men, were killed and over a dozen injured in a suicide attack on a police station during a peace rally in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday, officials said. The explosion occurred when the Swat Peace Rally was in progress right across the police station in Kabal town in Swat district.The Swat Peace Rally was organised by the Swat Aman Jirga, a local tribal council, with participants carrying placards and raising slogans demanding peace in the region, which has witnessed a deterioration in the security situation in recent months. The bombing was confirmed as a suicide attack, with police and rescue teams rushing to the scene as security forces launched an investigation. Rescue teams shifted the injured to nearby hospitals, while police and other law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area. District police chief Omar Khan said at least five police officers were among those killed in the attack.

The death toll from the explosion in Kabal, Swat, has risen to 14, according to Rescue 1122. Nine bodies were received at Central Hospital Saidu Sharif and five at Kabal Hospital, while more than 15 injured people have received medical assistance.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) later claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.The TTP is separate from, but allied with, Afghanistan's Taliban rulers. Pakistani authorities have long accused Afghanistan's Taliban government of providing sanctuary to TTP militants, an allegation Kabul has consistently denied.
