A suspect is in custody and sustained serious injuries during the confrontation. The FBI and Metropolitan Police Department are leading the probe, with assistance from the Secret Service and ATF. President Trump, briefed while at Mar-a-Lago for Thanksgiving, emphasized that the perpetrator will face severe consequences.
In a press conference after the shooting, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said this was a ‘targeted attack’. Metropolitan Police Department official Jeffery Carroll said that it was an ‘ambush’ by a lone gunman, who ‘came around the corner’ before firing at the soldiers. Other National Guard members then intervened to end the attack. The shooting unfolded near Farragut Square, a busy lunch spot ringed by offices, chain restaurants and coffee shops, and decorated for the holiday season with wreaths and bows wrapped around lamp posts. The park sits next to two Metro stations and is only a short walk from the White House.
