Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead inside his office chamber at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Agartala on Monday in a suspected case of suicide. The senior police officer was rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A high-level investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.According to reports, Dhankar was found hanging inside his office chamber at the PHQ. Senior doctor Dr Pradip Bhowmik said Dhankar was brought to the hospital at around 12 pm with no pulse, blood pressure, temperature or other vital signs."A team of our experts provided CPR for about 48 minutes. Despite all our efforts, we could not revive him, and at 12:48 pm, we officially declared him dead," he said.
Senior police officials rushed to the Police Headquarters soon after the incident, secured the area and launched an investigation. The exact cause of death will be established after a post-mortem examination He was a 1994 batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre. He assumed charge as the Director General of Police in May 2025 after being appointed by the state government. Before taking over as DGP, he had served as Tripura's DG(Intelligence). Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances of his death, and further details are awaited.
