As part of the mission, two pilot coffee clusters have been identified in the state Tuophema village in Kohima district for Arabica coffee cultivation and Ghotovi village in Niuland district for Robusta coffee production.According to the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the programme aims to address gaps across the coffee value chain while ensuring improved market access and higher income opportunities for farmers.
Speaking at the launch event, Scindia said the mission reflects the Prime Minister’s vision of making farmers active stakeholders in the entire agricultural value chain.“This is not merely a Whole of Government approach, but truly a Whole of India approach, bringing together governments, ministries, farmers, entrepreneurs, processors, branding experts, exporters and market leaders onto one common platform,” the minister said.He noted that the “Coffees of Nagaland” mission has been designed as a complete value-chain development programme to transform Nagaland from a raw coffee-producing region into a premium single-origin coffee economy with strong domestic and international market presence.

Scindia said the initiative also aims to establish “Brand North East – Coffees of Nagaland” through trade fairs, media outreach campaigns and coffee tourism experiences. He added that the mission would encourage coffee farm stays and farm-to-cup tourism activities in the pilot clusters to enhance the state’s tourism potential alongside agricultural growth.“The true success of the initiative would be reflected when ‘Coffees of Nagaland’ secure premium shelf space in both domestic and international markets, while ensuring higher and more sustainable incomes for coffee-growing communities across the state,” he said.
Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar said the integration of organic certification, geographical indication (GI) tagging and digital traceability mechanisms would help farmers gain direct access to premium global markets and improve income realisation.Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio described the initiative as a major step in the state’s agricultural diversification and rural development efforts. He said coffee cultivation has emerged as an important alternative to shifting cultivation and offers strong potential for environmentally sustainable farming and long-term livelihood generation.Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, said Nagaland’s agro-climatic conditions are highly favourable for producing premium-quality Arabica and Robusta coffee. He added that the cluster-based model would enable small farmers to benefit through shared infrastructure, technical assistance and collective branding initiatives.
