Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and his cabinet colleagues arrived in Jagdishpur on Sunday in an electric bus to attend a special cabinet meeting, signalling the government's emphasis on simplicity, fuel conservation and environmental sustainability. The meeting, currently underway in the historic town formerly known as Islamnagar, is expected to approve the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill before it is introduced in the state Assembly during the Monsoon Session beginning July 20. According to agency reports, the state government has said the decision to use an electric bus instead of a traditional motorcade reflects its commitment to resource conservation and sustainable governance. Officials and ministers also travelled by buses for the meeting.
The proposed UCC Bill is the key agenda item before the cabinet. Once approved, the draft legislation is expected to be tabled in the five-day Monsoon Session of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, scheduled from July 20 to July 24. Preparations for the special cabinet meeting had been completed in advance, with elaborate security, traffic management and administrative arrangements made at the venue.

Earlier this week, the high-level committee constituted to prepare the draft Uniform Civil Code submitted its final report, comprising three volumes, to Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav. The cabinet's approval is expected to pave the way for the legislation's introduction in the Assembly.
Speaking at a public gathering in Katni on Friday, Yadav had said the state was moving ahead with the principle of "One Nation, One Law" and that the proposed legislation would first receive cabinet approval in Jagdishpur before being placed before the Assembly."We are moving ahead with the principle of 'One Nation, One Law' in the upcoming Monsoon Session. Before taking this proposed legislation to the Legislative Assembly for its passage, we will approve it in Jagdishpur, which was once the old capital of the Bhopal state. Its name had been changed to Islamnagar by invaders, but it has now been restored to Jagdishpur," the Chief Minister had said. Yadav has also argued that the proposed law is aimed at ensuring uniformity in personal laws across communities."When there should be one nation, one Constitution, one head and one flag, why should there be separate laws for Hindus and Muslims? Under the proposed Uniform Civil Code, only a person who has one marriage will have the legal right to reside in Madhya Pradesh," he had said.

Jagdishpur, located on the outskirts of Bhopal, was officially renamed from Islamnagar in 2023. The government has described the venue as historically significant, saying it was once the capital of the erstwhile Bhopal state.
