Heavy snowfall hits Himachal, Uttarakhand and J&K

Fresh snowfall across the Western Himalayan region disrupted daily life, blocking roads and prompting authorities to issue travel advisories in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand. The weather shift comes after weeks of dry conditions and has affected road connectivity and visibility across high-altitude districts.Moderate to heavy snowfall continued overnight in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul-Spiti district, leading to the closure of several key routes.Heavy snowfall has led to the closure of 1,291 roads across the state. Shimla wakes up to a spell of intense snowfall.

Meteorological Department issues alerts for the coming days. According to IMD, an intense Western Disturbance is set to impact the Western Himalayan region from 26–28 Jan, bringing light to moderate rainfall at many places and isolated heavy rain/snowfall on 27 January.

Due to heavy snow accumulation, National Highway-1D connecting Kashmir with Ladakh has been closed for traffic.In Jammu and Kashmir, snowfall and rain led to the closure of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44). Traffic was halted at multiple points, including Jakhani Chowk in Udhampur, due to slippery conditions.

Public Works Minister on Himachal Pardesh Vikramaditya Singh said that, in view of the snowfall forecast, a review meeting with departmental officials was held in advance and a plan was prepared to deploy machinery in high-altitude areas. The minister also urged tourists not to panic and to avoid unnecessary travel. The monitoring cell is continuously collecting ground reports, and road restoration work is being carried out on a war footing using JCBs, snow blowers, and other machinery.
