Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel reviews flood situation in Surat

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday reviewed the flood situation in Surat along with Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil, senior officials and public representatives, following widespread flooding triggered by heavy rainfall in South Gujarat.The high-level review meeting assessed the impact of the floods in Surat and neighbouring districts and discussed measures to strengthen flood management and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said Surat witnessed its highest recorded rainfall on July 7, leading to severe flooding in several parts of the city."Many areas in Surat had to face a flood situation due to heavy rains on July 7. Looking at past rainfall records, this was the heaviest rainfall the city has witnessed. The people of Surat worked as a team to overcome this difficult situation and extended support to government agencies wherever possible," he said.Sanghavi said seven to eight areas experienced severe waterlogging, prompting large-scale rescue and evacuation operations by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies.He said the Chief Minister announced a Rs500 crore project aimed at preventing creek water from entering Surat city during periods of heavy rainfall and high tides.

Valsad BJP MP Dhaval Patel said the Chief Minister also reviewed the flood situation in Navsari and Valsad, where heavy rains caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas and damaged properties."The Chief Minister held a comprehensive review meeting with MLAs, mayors and district administration officials to assess the damage and discuss long-term measures to prevent such incidents in South Gujarat. The state government is committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure better flood preparedness," Patel said.The flood situation in Surat remains a matter of concern, with several localities continuing to grapple with the aftermath of heavy rainfall.According to agency reports,on Wednesday, NDRF personnel rescued and evacuated 85 people, including 36 men, 27 women and 22 children, from the flood-affected Sriram Nagar Society in Surat as rescue and relief operations continued across the city.Authorities said efforts are underway to restore normalcy in the affected areas while monitoring water levels and providing assistance to residents.
