EC announces July 24 bypolls to 3 Rajya Sabha seats in West Bengal

The Election Commission on Monday announced that bypolls to three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal will be held on July 24 following the resignation of three rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) members.The vacancies arose after TMC Rajya Sabha MPs Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik resigned on different dates in June after questioning the party leadership in the wake of its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.According to the election schedule, polling for the three Rajya Sabha seats will take place on July 24, and the counting of votes will be held on the evening of the same day.

The bypolls assume political significance as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which registered a sweeping victory in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, is expected to strengthen its presence in the Rajya Sabha following the outcome of the three contests.The Election Commission is expected to issue the detailed notification outlining the nomination schedule, scrutiny of papers and withdrawal of candidature as part of the election process.The results of the bypolls are likely to alter the party-wise strength in the Upper House, with the BJP poised to increase its representation from West Bengal.
