BSF jawan returns to India, Pakistan Rangers personnel also sent back

BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in Pakistan Rangers' custody since 23 April 2025, repatriated to India on Wednesday. In West Bengal, his wife Rajani Shaw thanked PM Modi and the Centre for his safe release. He e inadvertently crossed the international border in the Ferozepur sector of Punjab.  Shaw  was handed over through the Attari Joint Check Post in Amritsar. The handover was conducted peacefully and by established protocols. He was part of a team protecting farmers working near the border fence when detained. He  hails from Rishra in West Bengal’s Hooghly district. The jawan, belonging to the 24th BSF battalion, will not be drafted in active duty and will also be part of an official inquiry instituted by the Punjab frontier of the BSF to look into the sequence of his apprehension by the Rangers and find lapses, if any, they said.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed the release of BSF constable Purnam Kumar Shaw from Pakistan’s custody, and said she was constantly in touch with his family while efforts were underway to secure the jawan's return.A senior government official said that a Pakistan Rangers personnel who was detained in India along the Rajasthan border on May 3 was also returned to Pakistan on Wednesday.
