As voting for the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 got underway on Wednesday, Jagannath Sarkar alleged that a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) booth agent was assaulted by workers linked to the TMC in the Nadia district.According to Sarkar, the incident occurred in the Nadia-Chhapra Assembly constituency, where BJP polling agent Mosharraf Mir, stationed at booth number 52 under Hatra Panchayat, was allegedly attacked around 5:30 a.m. The assailants, said to be unidentified, reportedly used iron rods and firearms during the assault.“Chhapra is a minority-dominated area where ‘gundagardi’ happens with help from TMC, which doesn’t want any BJP booth agents present in the constituency. We are demanding strict action in this incident,” Sarkar stated.

Police officials intervened and rescued the injured agent, who was later admitted to Chapra Rural Hospital. Medical sources confirmed that Mir sustained head injuries and required six stitches. His condition is said to be stable.Sarkar further alleged that BJP workers and booth-level agents are being systematically targeted to obstruct the party’s electoral activities. He urged the administration to ensure the safety of political workers and called for strict action against those responsible.
Meanwhile, voter turnout in the early hours reflected steady participation. The Election Commission reported an overall turnout of 18.39 per cent till 9 a.m. Purba Bardhaman recorded the highest polling at 20.86 per cent, followed by Hooghly at 20.16 per cent. Nadia registered 18.50 per cent turnout, while North 24 Parganas reported 17.81 per cent.
In the urban constituencies, Kolkata North and Kolkata South recorded 17.28 per cent and 16.81 per cent turnout respectively, while Howrah saw 17.76 per cent voting.The second phase of polling, covering 142 of the total 294 seats, is being closely watched as a key test for the ruling Trinamool Congress, particularly in its strongholds across South Bengal and Kolkata. The electoral contest is primarily between the TMC and the BJP.
Senior leaders were also seen participating in the voting process. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited polling booths in the Bhabanipur constituency to assess arrangements, while TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee cast his vote at the Mitra Institute polling station.The phase involves a total electorate of approximately 3.21 crore voters, including over 1.64 crore men, 1.57 crore women, and 792 transgender voters. As many as 1,448 candidates, including 220 women, are contesting across 41,001 polling stations, with more than 8,000 booths being managed entirely by women.The counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections will take place on May 4, alongside results for Assembly polls in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
