BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar alleges TMC-backed booth agent attack

As voting for the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 got underway on Wednesday, Jagannath Sarkar alleged that a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) booth agent was assaulted by workers linked to the TMC in the Nadia district.According to Sarkar, the incident occurred in the Nadia-Chhapra Assembly constituency, where BJP polling agent Mosharraf Mir, stationed at booth number 52 under Hatra Panchayat, was allegedly attacked around 5:30 a.m. The assailants, said to be unidentified, reportedly used iron rods and firearms during the assault.“Chhapra is a minority-dominated area where ‘gundagardi’ happens with help from TMC, which doesn’t want any BJP booth agents present in the constituency. We are demanding strict action in this incident,” Sarkar stated.

Police officials intervened and rescued the injured agent, who was later admitted to Chapra Rural Hospital. Medical sources confirmed that Mir sustained head injuries and required six stitches. His condition is said to be stable.Sarkar further alleged that BJP workers and booth-level agents are being systematically targeted to obstruct the party’s electoral activities. He urged the administration to ensure the safety of political workers and called for strict action against those responsible.

The electoral contest is primarily between the TMC and the BJP.
Senior leaders were also seen participating in the voting process. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited polling booths in the Bhabanipur constituency to assess arrangements, while TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee cast his vote at the Mitra Institute polling station. The phase involves a total electorate of approximately 3.21 crore voters, including over 1.64 crore men, 1.57 crore women, and 792 transgender voters.
