Bihar: Rising Ganga triggers erosion in Danapur

Rising water levels in the Ganga have affected several areas of Danapur in Bihar, triggering erosion at multiple locations and increasing the risk to lives and property, state Minister Ram Kripal Yadav said on Monday.According to agency reports, Yadav toured the affected areas along with officials and party workers and said the administration had been directed to ensure that people in flood-hit and cut-off areas do not face shortages of essential supplies or difficulties in reaching safer locations.
“Floodwaters have entered several areas. Today, I toured the affected areas alongside officials and party workers. Erosion is occurring at multiple locations, increasing the risk of loss of life and property,” Yadav said.
The minister said officials had been asked to arrange boats in areas where rising water levels have disrupted road connectivity and ensure ration supplies to villages that have been completely cut off.“I have asked for arrangements to be made, such as providing boats and, in accordance with established norms, supplying rations to villages that have become completely cut off,” he said.Yadav said shelters had also been set up at some locations and directed officials to ensure adequate arrangements for flood-affected residents.“Shelters are set up in some locations. I have instructed that preparations be made at these sites according to requirements so that the flood-affected people face no difficulties,” he said.
He also highlighted the role of government boat services in maintaining connectivity and assisting people living in vulnerable areas during periods of high water levels. According to the minister, government boat services have been operating in the region for the past several years through the joint efforts of the Centre and the state government.Meanwhile, Danapur Sub-Divisional Officer Anirudh Pandey said the recent rise in the Ganga’s water level had led to erosion in the area. The administration was working to maintain essential services, including ferry connectivity, while coordinating with the Water Resources Department to tackle the erosion, he said.Authorities are monitoring vulnerable stretches along the river as rising water levels continue to put pressure on low-lying areas. Efforts are also underway to assess locations at risk and minimise further damage to homes and property.
