The Assam government has decided to rename Assam's Karimganj district as ‘Sribhumi’ which refers to the land of Maa Lakshmi. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday."Over a 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore had described modern day Karimganj District in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’- the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today the #AssamCabinet has fulfilled this long standing demand of our people," the Chief Minister said in a post on X.The Assam CM said that this decision will reflect the expectations and aspirations of the people of the district.

Congress leaders, defined, such a move as a vote bank politics. Party MLA, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha said, “The BJP leaders are trying to change the ‘history’ itself.” “No development work, and add to it, the rise of unemployment has been kept aside for issues like changing the name of a place to make its mark. It’s very unfortunate,” said, Kamalakhya.
