Assam CM for removing 'socialism, secularism' from Constitution

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on Saturday that 'socialism' and 'secularism' are Western concepts, and these words should be struck off of the Constitution. He said these words were included in the Preamble of the Constitution by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and these have no place in Indian civilisation, claiming they were legacies of the Emergency era and not part of India’s original constitutional framework. "How can I be secular? I am a hardcore Hindu. A Muslim person is a hardcore Muslim person. How can he be secular?" Sarma said. Speaking at the launch of the book "The Emergency Diary", which chronicles the resistance movement during the 1975 Emergency—particularly the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—Sarma called for a full ideological break from what he described as remnants of the Indira Gandhi era. This is the right moment to wipe out all the legacies of the Emergency, he said in Guwahati.“The word 'secular' contradicts the Indian concept of 'Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava', which reflects equal respect for all religions,” he said. “And 'socialism' was never our economic concept. India always stood for 'Sarvodaya' and 'Antyodaya'—upliftment of all, especially the last person in the queue.”

Sarma also alleged that the facebook account of assam Youth Congress is being run from Saudi Arabia.One should be extra careful in such cases related to national security.

Sarma said, History must objectively assess Mrs Indira Gandhi's role.
