Amit Chavda reappointed Gujarat Congress Chief for second term

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Thursday reappointed senior leader Amit Chavda as the president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, marking his second stint in the role.Chavda, a legislator from Anklav in Anand district and a prominent OBC leader, previously held the position from 2018 to 2021 before stepping down following the party’s poor performance in local body polls. The 49-year-old leader succeeds Shaktisinh Gohil, Rajya Sabha MP, who resigned earlier this month after Congress lost the bypolls in Visavadar and Kadi constituencies.
In a parallel announcement, the AICC appointed Khedbrahma MLA and tribal leader Dr. Tushar Chaudhary as the leader of the legislative assembly. Chaudhary, the son of former Gujarat Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary, is expected to strengthen the party’s outreach among tribal communities.Chavda’s elevation comes amid internal turmoil and follows a series of meetings between state leaders and top Congress leadership, including Rahul Gandhi. Party insiders suggest the decision could deepen existing factionalism. “It is going to break the Congress further before the 2027 assembly polls. The same faction that led to Gohil’s exit has now succeeded,” a senior leader remarked.
Chavda is closely related to former Congress chief and ex-Union minister Bharatsinh Solanki and is the son of veteran leader Ishwarbhai Chavda. Known for his aggressive stance against the ruling BJP, he has been vocal about alleged financial scams, including one in Dahod that led to the arrest of two sons of a BJP minister.The Gujarat Congress faces a challenging task of revival ahead of the next state elections. In the 2022 Assembly polls, the party managed to secure only 17 seats out of 182, later losing five MLAs—including local heavyweight Arjun Modhwadia—to the BJP.
