In West Bengal, the Mamta Banerjee led TMC is likely to split. The appointment of the Leader of Opposition has exposed the divide within the party. According to sources have a section of TMC MLAs are all set to back "rebel" Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha. This will be a rebellion against party supremo Mamata Banerjee whose close aide and MLA, Sobhondeb Chattopadhyay, has been named party's official choice for the post.
Suspended TMC leader Riju Dutta has reportedly claimed that 50 party MLAs are united, met at a hotel recently, and form two-thirds majority. He also said that some party leaders would approach the Speaker of the Assembly to raise their issues. Since we are the real Trinamool Congress, the Leader of the Opposition will be Ritabrata Bandopadhyay, and not Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay,” Dutta said, adding that since the majority is formed by the said legislators, they should also be allowed to retain the party symbol.Riju Dutta has said Shiv Sena Maharashtra model is currently in effect in West Bengal.
The divide became clear on Sunday as 60 of the TMC's 80 MLAs skipped a meeting called at Mamata Banerjee's residence. Sources say that hectic meetings are on in Kolkata to bring the disgruntled TMC MLAs on board and keep the party intact in the House.
