18 dead after blast at firecracker manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh

At least 18 people were killed and several others injured after a powerful explosion triggered a fire at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Vetlapalem village of Kakinada district in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, officials said.District Collector and Magistrate Sagili Shan Mohan stated the condition of several injured persons is critical, with many shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Emergency teams rushed to the spot soon after the blast, and rescue operations were carried out amid fears that more workers could be trapped inside the premises.
State Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha expressed shock over the incident, describing it as heartbreaking. She said she had spoken to senior officials and directed them to ensure immediate medical assistance and relief measures for the affected families. The government, she added, would extend full support to those impacted by the tragedy.Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also conveyed his grief over the loss of lives. In a statement, he said the explosion at the crackers manufacturing unit in Vetlapalem had deeply pained him. He spoke to officials and instructed them to provide immediate assistance to the victims and their families.Officials briefed the Chief Minister about the incident while he was on a tour in Vizianagaram district. He said the state administration is closely monitoring the rescue and relief operations and assured that all necessary steps would be taken to support the affected families.

According to information, around 20 people were working at the crackers unit when the blast occurred. The exact cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, and an investigation has been initiated.
