In Assam, six former National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) extremists, who spent seven years behind bars in Gelephu prison in neighbouring Bhutan, were handed over to the Indian authorities on Friday evening.Their arrests were made by the Royal Bhutan Army in 2016 during the crackdown against militant activities at Gelephu in Bhutan. The released former NDFB cadres included- Jivan Basumatary, Sonaram Mochahary, Sonam Magar, Bimal Basumatary, Dilip Basumatary, and Fakhon Narzary. A special reception was given to the six ex-cadres at the entry gate of the India-Bhutan border at Gelephu. The reception was held under the auspices of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro and MP J. Basumatary.
The return of the six ex- NDFB cadres is seen as the most optimistic move towards reintegrating former NDFB people into the mainstream and also strengthening the peace endeavour in the region. It has also marked a growing cooperation between India and Bhutan that reflects a collective effort to keep the Bodoland Territorial Region stable and peaceful.
