India began their Men's Hockey World Cup 2023 campaign with 2-0 win over Spain at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, Rourkela on Friday. Amit Rohidas opened the scoring in the first quarter with a stunning strike and then a cross by Hardik Singh was deflected by a Spanish defender to make it 2-0. Captain Harmanpreet Singh could have made it 3-0 but missed a penalty stroke in the second half. India were clinical after a passive start in the first quarter and dominated possession, circle penetrations in a dominant display of hockey which would have made coach Graham Reid happy.

Local lad Amit Rohidas, who was declared the Player of the Match, sent the Rourkela crowd into a tizzy when he caught hold of a deflection from a penalty corner and smashed it into the top right corner. It was a stunning stroke that got India off the mark in the home World Cup.
