India failed to qualify for the Hockey World Cup 2023 quarter-finals as the hosts lost to New Zealand in the shootout 4-5 of the must-win crossover match at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar on Sunday.The teams played out a 3-3 draw at full-time, taking the match into the shootout. India and New Zealand were tied at 3-3 in the shootout as the match entered sudden death, where New Zealand booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a 5-4 win over India.

The match moved into the penalties after both India and New Zealand were tied at 3 goals each in the full time. Lalit Upadhyay scored from the right flank to break the deadlock while Sukhjeet Singh followed him with another goal as India scored two in the second quarter. The same quarter also saw Sam Lane helping the guests close the gap on India. The hosts extended their lead to 3-1 as Varun Kumar scored India's third goal in the third quarter. However, New Zealand scored later in the third quarter to make it 2-3 before they levelled the scores in the final quarter.
