Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka, on Saturday defeated Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in the final to win the women’s singles title at the Australian Open 2023. The fifth seed defeated the 22nd seed 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to claim her maiden singles Grand Slam. The 24 yeqr old Sabalenka took 2 hours and 28 minutes to close out the match.

The reigning Wimbledon champion Rybakina seemed to be in control after winning the first set, but was completely outplayed in the second set by Sabalenka, who then fought her way to claim the decider, despite squandering three championship points.

It was also the first time Rybakina beat Sabalenka in the first set of a match in their four meetings thus far. More importantly, after winning 20 sets in a row in 2023, Sabalenka finally had her serve broken.
