Asian Games: India opens medal account with silver

India opened its medal account at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a silver in the women’s 10m air rifle team event on Sunday. The Indian trio of Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod finished with a combined score of 1898 points to secure the silver medal, finishing behind China. Japan finished fourth, while Korea remained in contention with one shooter yet to complete her series.Elavenil delivered a strong individual performance, registering 633.5 points to qualify for the individual final. Sonam Maskar also booked her place in the individual final.

Meanwhile, India also secured a medal in the women’s traditional 60kg MMA event, with Suchika Tariyal advancing to the semifinal after defeating Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa in Nagoya.  Baigalmaa came out aggressively in the second and final round in an attempt to turn the contest around, but Suchika’s defence remained firm under sustained pressure.
As the Mongolian continued to attack, Suchika produced a crucial reversal and took her opponent to the ground. She maintained control until the end of the round to secure the victory. With the win, Suchika advanced to the semifinal and assured India of another medal at the Games.
