Recent defections hurt the Congress party badly. First in Karnataka, then in MP and now in Rajasthan, One section of Congress legislators ditched the party. Taking advantage of this opportunity... BJP formed the government in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh with the help of those defected MLAs. Now the Congress party feels not comfortable with the existing Anti Defection Law and wants drastic changes in this decades old law. Whereas Anti Defection Law was brought in by Rajiv Gandhi Govt.
Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Sunday called for amending the anti-defection law and in an apparent swipe at BJP he tweeted that "Need for Vaccine: Virus of 'corrupt means' to topple elected governments has spread through a 'Wuhan like facility' in Delhi," He said that it's 'antibodies' lie in amending the Tenth Schedule. Sibal demanded ban on all defectors from holding public office and contesting the next election for five years.
Out of 200 members in the house of Rajasthan Assembly, Congress has 107 MLAs, including 19 dissidents who have been issued notices of disqualification by the Speaker. The dissident group led by Sachin Pilot has challenged this notice in Rajasthan High Court. . Congress party still maintain its claim of 109 MLA's support including two BTP MLA's and said that Gehlot govt. is stable.
In the present crisis amid crossing the anti defection law.... the Rajasthan episode has forced the Congress to think over this law.. But experts have other views. They say that the Congress has lost control over their winning leaders and want to save the party from being reduced to mere single figure. But the surprising thing is that no reaction from the party high command either in favour or against Sibal . One thing is certain any ruling party will not give any response to such demands till defection suits them.
BJP on the other hand regained power in these states where the party was defeated by slender margin in the last assembly elections. Now what is good and what is healthy for democracy has become a thing of the past.
