Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi Monday targeted the Central government and said that it was trying to malign leaders Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru to further its political propaganda. “The Indian National Congress will oppose every bid by this narcissist government to falsify historical facts and malign leaders like Gandhi-Nehru-Azad-Patel,” she said. Gandhi took a jibe at the government in her Independence Day wish, a day after a row erupted after BJP dropped Nehru from its Har Ghar Tiranga advertisement in Karnataka. The Congress said the exclusion of Nehru proves the desperation of Karnataka chief minister BS Bommai to save his chair.

Wishing the country on the occasion of India’s 76th Independence Day, Sonia Gandhi said: “Over the last 75 years, highly talented Indians have led the country on the path of progress in the fields of science, education, health, and information. The visionary leaders of India laid the foundations of a free, fair, and transparent election system. They also made provisions for a strong democracy and constitutional institutions.” She also highlighted that India, through her diverse cultures and languages, had cemented its image as a glorious nation.
