Parliament clears two Farm Bills amid ruckus in RS

The Rajya Sabha on Sunday passed two Two key agriculture reform bills -- Farmers' and Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, which farmers have been protesting against, amid a ruckus as opposition members shouted slogans and trooped into the well of the House. Two of the three bills were presented by the Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar. He said these biis are historic  legislations that would "bring a change in the lives of farmers". I want to assure the farmers that these bills are not related to Minimum Support Price (MSP),” Tomar said in the Rajya Sabha.

Several members, including O’Brien, the CPI’s KK Ragesh, Trichi Siva of the DMK and Congress’ KC Venugopal, moved resolutions asking for the two bills to be sent a select committee of the House for consideration before they are taken up for passage.They also showed the rule book to the chairperson Harivansh during the debate on the contentious farm bills. Congress MP Pratap Singh Bajwa said his party would not sign "death warrant for farmers". Later , Rajya Sabha adjourned till 9.00 a ma onn Monday. Lok Sabha has already passed these two bills. 

Prime minister Narendra Modi congratulated the farmers after two of the three agricultural bills intended to revolutionize the farming sector were passed in the Upper House of the Parliament. Modi pointed out that the farming sector in India is in need of technological and structural upgrades citing that the bills will pave a path for farmers to increase their yields by using better tools.
