Myanmar: Suu Kyi appears in court in person for first time

Former State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi appeared in court in the capital city Naypyitaw on Monday in person for the first time since the military took over power from the civilian government on February 1. Suu Kyi is facing charges ranging from illegally procuring communication equipment to violating state secrets law punishable by 14 years in prison. According to reports she looked in good health during her 30-minute long meeting with the legal team but she said she had no access to newspapers during her detention. Her legal team head Khin Maung Zaw told Reuters that she was only partially aware of what was happening outside.
Suu Kyi wisheed people good health in her meeting with the lawyers. She also said that her party grew out of people and so it will exist as long as people support it, reports Reuters. Myanmar military appointed Election Commission has decided to dissolve the National League for Democracy (NLD) on the charges that it won the November 8 election last year based on fraud. Meanwhile, local media reported that protests took place in several towns like Monywa, Sagaing region in Myanmar on Monday against the military government. Following the military takeover of the government on February 1, at least 818 people have been killed in protests against the government in Myanmar, says the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) in Myanmar.
